I will provide you with a link when I have more time about horse behavior. The answer can be somewhat depressing to many people. For now I will say that if you give them room to get out treat them kindly, feed them well and let them know that you are in charge (horses are a herd animal that have a "pecking order". They really do find security in knowing where they stand in that order. For the safety and best interest of both human and horse the human needs to establish they are #1) I believe that is as good as you can do in helping them to have happiness.
